Facial Cosmetic Surgery Board Certification: A Timeline

Facial Cosmetic Surgery Board Certification: A Timeline

If you’re planning to practice as a facial cosmetic surgeon, you need to know the timeline for earning board certification from the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery (ABFCS). Below, we lay out all of the steps you can expect, from surgical residency training to board certification in facial cosmetic surgery.

As an important step on this path, many surgeons will undergo post-residency fellowship training to hone their skills in the specialty, so fellowship deadlines are included; however, if you will be applying for ABFCS certification with previous experience or training in facial cosmetics, you can skip ahead to the date that the next ABFCS applications are live.

Timeline for achieving facial cosmetic surgery board certification. Fellowship training with AACS may be required, then ABFCS application are live in October; applications are due in February; Written exam is in May; Oral exam is in August; and ABFCS announces new Diplomates in January. ABFCS certification maintenance occurs every 10 years.

*Not all surgeons require AACS fellowship training to become eligible for ABFCS certification, as experience or an equivalent fellowship may qualify you.
