ABFCS Executive Director Michael Brady Explains How He Got Involved in the ABFCS, and Why

The American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery focuses solely on certifying safe facial cosmetic surgeons. Patients rely on trusted medical boards like ours to set standards for certification, training, and safety, and know that when they choose an ABFCS board certified surgeon, they will be in the hands of a proven, highly-experienced facial cosmetic specialist.

In this video, Michael Brady, Executive Director of the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgery, explains his dedication to the board’s mission, what he enjoys most about working with facial cosmetic surgeons, and how surgeons can benefit from ABFCS board certification.

How did you get involved with the ABFCS?

My mentor, Peter Canalia introduced me to this organization where I could work alongside elite cosmetic facial plastic surgeons who were committed to safety and advancement in their field. It was an opportunity for me to grow with these professionals and positively impact the future of this industry.

What do you enjoy most about working with ABFCS Diplomates?

One of the most rewarding experiences I’ve had in working with our Diplomates is seeing these surgeons commit themselves to growing their practice, patient safety, and their continuous pursuit of knowledge and surgical advancement. To earn their ABFCS board certification, our surgeons dedicate themselves to mastering facial cosmetic procedures beyond their residency program. Our surgeons are required to undergo fellowship training to hone their skills or have proven exceptional expertise through experience and marked contributions to their respective field. It is inspiring to see this level of dedication and work with some of the most skilled surgeons in the country.

What does facial cosmetic surgery board certification promote?

ABFCS surgeons promote a camaraderie that drives them to stay on the cutting edge in their field. The ABFCS membership and its Diplomates spans several different medical fields, bringing great expertise and insight, though patient safety has been the utmost priority across the board. Our members hold themselves and each other to the highest standards, pledging to adhere to the ABFCS Code of Ethics as part of their board certification requirement.

“Getting to watch these surgeons commit themselves to their practice… has been one of the most rewarding things I have ever done.”

What value does the ABFCS offer to facial cosmetic surgeons?

When a Diplomate joins the ABFCS, they gain a network of support from like-minded colleagues who share a commitment to surgical and academic excellence. Mentorship among ABFCS colleagues with diverse surgical backgrounds encourages our surgeons to share their expertise and clinical information and together collaborate on advancing facial cosmetic surgery techniques.

Patients also know the value of facial cosmetic surgery board certification, which demonstrates high expertise and a commitment to safety—making ABFCS surgeons stand out in their field. Diplomates are backed by the ABFCS brand which proves they meet certain markers and demonstrates their intrinsic motivation for professional advancement and continuing education.

Board certification in facial cosmetic surgery is likely to extend the longevity of a Diplomate’s career over what they might experience in a related area of surgical practice. Cosmetic plastic surgery is an evolving field, with new research, techniques, and products emerging with regularity. Diplomates who establish a private cosmetic surgery practice enjoy the benefits of setting their own hours and performing their preferred procedures, unencumbered by the health insurance reimbursement system.

How can Diplomates get involved in the ABFCS organization?

Diplomates can get involved in the ABFCS by joining a committee, becoming a member of the Board of Trustees, and eventually rising to the highest points of leadership in our organization. Leadership roles within the ABFCS are mutually beneficial to the brand and our Diplomates; it is an excellent distinction to include in a practice’s marketing materials. As the surgeon grows individually, their practice benefits from their cultivated knowledge and leadership, while the ABFCS brand is strengthened by the quality and reach of its Diplomates. This partnership is how the American Board of Facial Cosmetic Surgeons will continue to grow in the United States and internationally.
